Pixies

Outgoing, free-spirited, tricksters.

Physical Description

Pixies are very small, very beautiful humanoids (ranging from 3-6 inches, from birth to full grown, 'Big Size' 4-6ft usually) with elongated elf-like ears and relatively large wings protruding from their backs, these wings vary in color but are usually found to resemble butterfly or dragonfly wings. Pixie wings are often translucent. They use their wings to fly and rarely actually touch the ground, preferring to hover when not moving. A pixie's wings are constantly flapping at a very quick pace (These wing traits do not exactly apply in 'Big Size') A pixie's complexion can range in a variety of colors including shades of blue, orange, and green. They are the epitome of a what it means to be a magical being, with powers such as glamour and dust to be among the top in one's arsenal. They also have the ability to affect their own nature, by making their selves "Big Size" and even granting themselves the ability to fly while in the "Big Size", albeit not very high, not very far, and not for very long before they have to mentally granting it again.

History

Pixies were created by what they call the 'Maker'. As an experiment, he created the pixies as beautiful diminutive creatures, believing this to be the perfect form.

The pixies were given free reign over their exploits on behalf of the 'Maker'. But the pixies are natural tricksters. There have been stories of female pixies using their allure to distract would-be heroes from their adventuring, entering the human, elven, and fae towns to cause disruptions and mayhem whenever possible through subtle deceptions and rumor mongering. The male pixies are usually said to have used far more direct methods, including assassinations and sabotage, although usually remaining out of sight.

Over time, the pixies acclimated into the other races' societies and although some people remained suspicious of them, pixies were generally considered friendly. There were some pixies who remained out of sight for the most part, however, acting as the unseen enforcers of their own selfish plots. Eventually, their subtlety became so effective that even the most astute towns person would never know that the latest brawl or decaying crops had been the work of the pixies.

There are truth to these stories, but they represent the worst of what being a pixie means. There are brave and daring pixies who do remarkable things for their size, they can be the most perceptive of creatures and have the most caring of hearts. These stories go unmentioned though, as almost all pixies feel the need to have playful fun, which includes pranks, tricks and deception. Most do not see any harm in what they do.

Organization

Pixies live in small villages that appear to be natural outgrowths of the forest. In truth, the pixies have the ability to bend tree branches and other flora by magic to create their homes. Pixies have little concept of "family" like most other races, instead referring to all their kind as "brothers or sisters" To be a pixie means to be a member of the largest family in all the world.

Pixies have a loosely structured community, and most of their beliefs are centered on trying to better themselves and integrating more into society. Many pixies still feel their past actions may cause the other races to attack them, but they try to force themselves to push past this and interact more with those other cultures.

Pixies have no recognized rulers. They seem to want very little direction or guidance on how to live their lives. When there is a disagreement, their cheerful nature allows them to resolve conflicts amongst themselves with little need for outside intervention or mediation. Their towns are often kept orderly by a simple need to maintain a positive outlook on life.

Disposition

Pixies tend to be very outgoing creatures, taking great pride in their appearance and beauty. Of all the virtues, humility seems to be the hardest for pixies to understand. Pixies love attention and do whatever it takes to be seen and noticed. They are the life of every party!

Despite their jovial attitude, pixies just can't pass up the opportunity to play tricks on travelers and even on their friends. These tricks are rarely violent these days, although they can sometimes be a nuisance. This compulsion to perform various mischievous acts provides the perfect way for the pixies to release their darker side in a relatively safe and healthy manner, helping them to avoid falling into the darkness that people believe them to already be apart of.

Pixies are very uncomfortable around unhappy people and will often spend hours (even days) trying to cheer up a gloomy person. More often than not, they are successful in their attempts, as their seemingly jovial outlook on life seems to saturate all others around them. Pixies enjoy helping others, even if they're constant games may get in the way at times.

Powers<

Pixies can be very dangerous opponents when threatened or when on a quest that requires them to fight. The 'Maker' imbued them with a strength unfitting of their size and cunning, which they now use when questing. They use their diminutive size to create a false sense of confidence in their opponents, striking quickly once their foe is off his guard. Pixies warriors spend a fair amount of time practicing with their weapons, but most prefer telling stories and making others laugh over the rigors of combat training. This is not to say that all pixies are good fighters, the same goes with any creature of the world, one cannot do something well without practice and hard work.

Possibly the pixie's top power is of course their pixie dust. All pixies make it, it's part of their genetic makeup. Where as a normal person would sweat, or put off pheromones, a pixie produces dust. So whenever a pixie would get excited or agitated, dust would trail from their wings and skin, there have even been rumors that the dust changes colors depending on the mood of the pixy.

A male pixie will use this for mating as well as an emotional sign or even a defensive mechanism, while the female pixie seems to only use it in defense or as a sign of emotion.

Pixies can release the dust at anytime, it's part of who they are. But the effect it has on beings that aren't pixies are astronomical. Suffice it to say, you will be itching for a few minutes, to a week, depending on the dose. It is not pleasant, and the only way to get rid of it sooner, is with a pixie's blessing. This is called 'pixing', while this can be removed by any pixie or healer and even some anti-itch medicines or potions, the pixie may find it extremely rude to do so, if you didn't do the pixing.

Weaknesses

Possibly their biggest weakness is to iron. They cannot bear the touch of iron, and pixies try their best to stay away from it as much as possible. Excessive contact with iron will kill a pixie. There is no way around this. It is said that if you keep an iron nail in your pocket, it will ward off pixies. For the most part that is true. There is another saying that if you line your doorways and window frames and chimneys and such it will keep the pixies out. While this may be a very, very expensive way to keep out pixies, it may just make them curious as to what your trying to hide. Regardless, iron is a ward against pixies, to actually harm them though, you must touch them with it.

Their size is possibly the second, they are small, and unnoticed in the world for the most part. Solitary pixies may not find this as such a problem as a more sociable pixie would. Their size prevents them from leading a life as 'the big people' do, and they know that some people look down on them for being nothing but 'bugs'. Also birds of prey may try and take down a pixie, for exactly that reason.

While in Big Size form, they are extremely limited in what they can do with their magic, limited flight (mostly just a low hover or a glide and for a small amount of time) and even less of an ability to work magic with plants. It is an unnatural time for a pixie to be in Big Size, and because of that, it is why most limit their time in that form. They are small people, even if sometimes they wish to be big.
