Toot
Thursday, 09 April 2009 21:42
Name: Pang Marag Mugak Nruk Nul Paral Pang

Due to fears instilled by the legends of his people it is very unlikely that he will give anyone his real name, and prefers to go by his nickname. If he were to give someone his real name it would be a large sign of trust and loyalty.

Nickname/Title: Toot

This is a nickname given to him by his father for the peculiar noise he makes when frightened, which sounds like a clumsy “toot” on a horn.

Gender: Male

Age: around 17 years

When asked his age Toot will most likely reply with “One and twenty adventures.”

Race: Viter Troll

Occupation: None, adventurer

Physical Appearance:

Like most Viter, Toot is very small, measuring just over two feet tall and weighing fifty pounds. He bares the shock white hair (which would reach halfway down his back if it were ever combed), the large hands and feet, and the misshapen skull common to his people. His skin is light shade of brown like dried mud and smattered with rough, wart-like blemishes. His amber-colored eyes are comically large, even for a Viter. His nose is of the long and thin variety, which is complemented by his long, thin, tapered ears. The only thing that would be considered out of the ordinary on Toot is a narrow scar running from the bridge of his nose up into his hairline.

When he uses his Monstrous Growth ability he grows to be seven feet tall and grows a pair of tusks. Other than that his appearance does not change.

To the eyes of most his dress would be considered very poor. His usual attire consists of clothing meant for small children or infants in the case of large babies or “fat little squealers” as he would call them. His feet are kept bare.

Personality: When in the presence of too many strangers that are not Troll-kin Toot becomes very quiet and jumpy. These are also, not surprisingly, traits he expresses when frightened. When the majority of the people around him are friends or Troll-kin, however, he becomes very talkative and excitable, but even in these situations he still appears slightly paranoid. He is normally kind and holds the “The Old Ways,” or the legends of his people, close at heart.

The little Viter also has a dark side though. He has a short temper, some of the pranks he pulls on people walk the line between innocent fun and cruelty, and he has no moral qualms about being malicious or petty to anyone.

Magics:

-Energy Storage: Along with other abilities the Viter people have, over time, developed the ability to pull magical energies into their bodies and store it there. They can not channel much energy at a given time, but the amount they can store in their body is very high (enough for an ordinary magic user to create a small explosion). When passing into dead zones all of this energy is stripped from them.

Toot’s method for channeling the energy into himself is a form of meditation. It is a more beneficial method than others used by some people as it allows him to replenish his energy while in hiding.

-Minor Illusions: Viters have the ability to cloak themselves in simple illusions. Most of them choose to squat down and cast the image of a tree stump or rock around themselves, but it is possible for them to cast the illusion directly atop their skin as a form of camouflage. The energy to fuel these illusions must come from the Viter’s stores as they can not channel enough energy directly from the world around them at the moment it is needed. Toot’s preferred image is that of a gnarled and blackened old stump.

-Monstrous Growth: Most male Viters have the ability to tap vast amounts of their stored energy all at once in order to increase their physical size by drastic amounts. When using this spell the Viter gains the size and strength of their larger, more commonly known troll cousins. The maximum duration of the spell depends on how long their body can tolerate the stress that accompanies the growth.

Once the spell has ended they are usually left with near-crippling physical pain. All the energy in their bodies that isn’t used by the spell is forced back out into the world by the spell’s ending, which means that they must spend several days gathering energy in order to use the spell again. This also means that they must gather more energy in order to cast their illusions again as well.

The longest Toot has managed to maintain this transformation for so far is four minutes. Somehow he is also capable of altering the spell slightly so that two of the front-most teeth in his lower jaw grow into tusks when he uses the spell.

Strengths/Good Qualities:

He is very adamant about repaying any major kindness that people show him, as the legends of the Viter teach. These payments are always of value to Toot in some way, though it may not seem like much for the recipient. In the past he has repaid people by helping them with a task or by giving them something from his hoard of “treasures.” Said hoard contains pretty much anything shiny he has managed to walk off with, from well-polished hair brushes to precious gems.

Another result of his adherence to “The Old Ways” is that Toot cares deeply for the nature and wildlife of Erde. Through this, and other teachings of his people, he has learned how to care for plants much as a very dedicated farmer might.

From all his time living in the forests of Erde Toot has gained a rather extensive knowledge of what is safe to eat and what isn’t. He also has a flare for making somewhat tasty meals out of various things found in the wild that aren’t normally all that appetizing.

He’s not the brightest thing in the world, but he has a voracious appetite for knowledge.

Weaknesses/Bad Qualities:

Toot is easily frightened and intimidated.

He is physically weak, even by the standards of his race.

Due to his slight stature and physique he cannot use larger weapons and hasn’t the skill to use the ones he can carry. It also makes him an extremely easy opponent to defeat unless aided by his Monstrous Growth spell. Even with that spell he still has no skill with weapons and relies on his enhanced strength to bludgeon his enemies until they are dead or flee in defeat.

He is often getting in trouble because of his pranks and the fact that so many shiny things develop a liking for his pockets all on their own.

Because of the way he acts many people think he is naïve and try to manipulate or otherwise take advantage of him. Many of them succeed.

Character History:

Toot was born in the dense forests surrounding the Vangor mountains, an which has a higher concentration of Viter Trolls than any other place on Erde. He had a large family, consisting of his parents and eight older siblings, and his family’s colony was very large as well, made up of twelve other families of just as big or bigger. His early life was very happy, with lots of others to run around and have adventures with.

After the first nine years of his life had passed it began to become apparent that Toot was different from his fellows. He angered much easier than the others and the pranks he pulled on the people of the nearby village were meaner spirited than those pulled by the other members of his colony. The most infamous of which upset much of the colony as they feared they would have to move to escape an angry mob of humans.

In his mind the prank was an innocent variation on one that was fairly common. The way most did it was to sneak into an area where a human was working or cooking, wait for them to turn their back, and then move or take something in order to confuse them. Toot thought that was too simple though. Where they waited for the people to become unawares he waited for them to fall asleep, and where they moved a tool he moved their infant…to the roof.

Over the next few years fewer and fewer people dared to involve him in their fun as his pranks continued to be too risky for their liking and he would frequently have fits of rage and attack people who attempted to hold him back from the adventure of his choosing. Eventually only his closest friends would let him in on their fun, but even they watched him closely and refused to let him plan anything. This also made it very hard for him to find a mate since female Viter are unlikely to take a mate they’re afraid to go out and have fun with.

Things continued in this way for some time with Toot becoming increasingly resentful of his people until he gave up and left his colony. After a few weeks out in the woods on his own he came across a new colony that accepted him. The people there weren’t as timid as those from his own colony, but they still weren’t as bold as him. In a rather impressive display of forethought for a Viter he came up with a plan to ease these new people into his way of doing things instead of simply jumping into his old ways.

At first it worked. The people of his new colony slowly came around and began to follow his example of mildly increasing bravery. He even began to catch the eye of a few girls. He himself took a liking one in particular, Roona. She was brave and sneaky and beautiful (by Viter standards anyway). After a time the two even began to go out on adventures by themselves. She enjoyed the devious pranks he devised so much that he even began to consider recreating the famous “Disappearing Squealer” prank for her.

Then, just as he was about ready to reveal that plan to her, his world turned sour again. Roona began to invent reasons to avoid doing things with him and even began to avoid him in general. Even the people that hadn’t seen some of the more daring things he had shown her began to act differently in his presence. Angry and hurt Toot withdrew from the world and holed himself up in the home he had to himself. After taking some time to nurse his wounds he returned to the world only to find that people’s opinion of him had only gotten worse, worse even than that of the people of his home colony.

Frustrated he sought out Roona and demanded to know what the reason was. She refused to tell him until her grew angry. Fearing that he would explode she revealed that his own brother had come to the colony in search of him, was staying with one of the other families, and had been spreading sensationalized tales of his viciousness throughout the place. Enraged he sought out his brother, and attacked him on sight.

The two fought and it didn’t take long for Toot’s older, stronger brother to best him. He had not only been lessened in the eyes of his new colony by his brother, but now he had also been embarrassed by him in public where all could see. The hatred and anger boiling inside him was unleashed in the form of the Viter ability to increase their size and strength by massive amounts. Toot grabbed his brother and pulverized him against the side of a tree, slamming his skull into the hard bark over and over.

When the spell’s effects waned he was too weak and in too much pain to even crawl away from those that now came for him. He had committed the only crime that his people could not forgive. He would be marked as a kin-slayer and thrown out into the world. No true Viter colony would ever allow him in now. From there he wandered deeper and deeper into the world of men, eventually taking up residence in a forest bordering one of Verre Zon’s neighboring settlements.

Belongings:

Toot has amassed a fairly large hoard of “treasures,” but as he sees only personal value in the objects, not monetary, what wealth his collection holds is lost on him. Aside from that his only possessions are stolen clothes.
