*Name: Matthias. When pressed for a last name he'll give Erravi. He sometimes also answers to Carcer or Teras *Gender: Male. Ish. He certainly looks male, and he identifies as a he, but the particulars behind gender are lost on him. *Age: Unknown. Physically mid-20s. *Race: Human. *Occupation: Itinerant laborer, tinker and freelance blacksmith. *Physical Appearance: Matt's body was spun out of magic by two women, at least one of which knew what she liked in a man. He's over all physically impressive. Six foot two, piercing blue eyes, thick dark hair and a ridiculously sculpted body. The overall effect is somewhat marred by dozens of scars crisscrossing his body, including one across the forehead and another on the left cheek stopping just shy of the eye. *Personality: Matt is one the nicest, most upbeat people you could ever meet, possessed of a childlike curiosity and an ability to bounce back from almost anything that borders on the irritating. He is also completely insane. Matt is just one fragment of a mind that knew it was going mad long ago and decided to try to make the most of it. As a result, Matt is constructively insane, with each fragment serving some purpose. Teras is a scholar and adviser, Carcer is the darkness to Matt's light, and the fourth fragment is pure rage and gibbering hate. Matt, as the most flexible and socially acceptable of the fragments is the one usually in charge. *Magics: Long ago, Matt existed as just a lost mind, drifting on the winds and occasionally haunting the odd animal. In extreme circumstances he can resume this form, abandoning his body to drift loose again. In this form Matt has no physical capabilities and his mental powers are limited to 'riding' something else's mind and making suggestions. People are far too noisy to inhabit this way, and Matt usually sticks to domesticated animals who are already used to taking suggestions from people. Matt was also told a long time ago that he had a natural talent for fire magic buried deep in his fractured soul. Nothing overt has come of it though, probably because he's never tried developing it. He does seem to have an aptitude for blacksmithing, cooking, and anything that involves careful control of fire and heat. *Strengths/Good Qualities: Matt's mind leads a separate existence from his body, giving him a near Zen mastery over his physical functions. This is not as great as it sounds, because although Matt can chose to ignore pain, not breathe or force himself to the mechanical limits of the human body, more often he forgets how to balance, or that fire is hot, or exactly where his head is in relation to low hanging branches. Matt isn't battle scarred, he's just really clumsy. Despite his constant minor injuries, Matt is almost relentlessly upbeat. He recovers incredibly quickly from any kind of mental trauma, taking any lessons learned to heart but quickly healing over the associated pain and misery. He doesn't even understand the concept of a grudge. Matt's other personalities can help him out in situations hes not equipped to deal with. Teras is an ivory tower researcher, usually doing little more then offering advice and bits of lore. Carcer is Matt's dark shadow, more then willing to break laws and bones to achieve a goal. Carcer tends not to see much action though, as he usually generates more trouble then he solves. The last fragment is for dire emergencies and usually comes out involuntarily. Its all the hate and rage bottled up inside a broken mind, only good for berserk rages. *Weaknesses/Bad Qualities: Most obviously, Matthias is completely insane. While the whole system mostly works, there are some downsides to having four fragments instead of a complete mind. The personality traits that define each fragment are lacking in the others. Matthias tends to be trusting and gullible, lacking the guile of Carcer. Carcer is brutal and heartless without the innocence that defines Matt. Teras doesn't like actually doing anything and usually doesn't offer advice unless asked. And the last fragment, called the Wolf, is an unreasoning ball of rage. Getting help from his other fragments often carries a price. Getting help from Carcer usually involves turning over control to him, something Matt hates doing. The Wolf invariably wants to rip, tear and destroy and is more unleashed than consulted. Teras is free with his advice, but it tends to be less then helpful. *Character History: Matt isn't exactly certain where he came from, or who he is, or what happened to make him the way he is today, or any of those other little niggling questions about the past. Neither is Carcer, and while Teras has his guesses its not the kind of thing he would ever burden Matthias with. Teras suspects the Wolf knows what happened and that its the source of his boundless rage. He is a little bit more certain of the more recent past. He had been wandering lost and alone through one of the high magic areas, skimming through the minds of the weirder animals who lived there. It was there he encountered a pair of powerful mages who took pity on him. They spun him a body out of magic and taught him how to use it and move around. One of them kept staring at him in a way that he was sure was inappropriate the entire time. After a time the two sent Matt back out into the world, to accomplish whatever it was he was meant to do. Which, as far as Matt has discovered, is to wander around aimlessly doing grunt labor in exchange for food and lodging. Hey, not every mystic creation has a higher purpose, and someone has to get the harvests in and mend horseshoes. Belongings: A worn but well cared for set of laborer's clothes, a walking stick, a cloak for cold weather and a few coins. Matt travels light both by necessity (he's poor) and preference (he doesn't mind it). Pets/Familiars: There's a terrier mutt that follows Matt around, but he wouldn't exactly call it his pet. So far despite his best efforts to name is Caspar it still only responds to 'Dog'. Other useful facts: Matt is a follower of Devian Thresher, a minor agricultural deity popular amongst rural folk. |
