Name: Thelonius Gant Nickname/Title: Theo Gender: Male Age: 32 Race: Human Occupation: Mercenary. Height: 5' 10" Weight: 185 Physical Description: Thelonius Gant is a decidedly average looking man, the kind of man who barely warrants a first look never mind a second one. He has dull grey eyes, short brown hair and normally a good few days worth of stubble on his face. He is always scruffy and gives the distinct impression that he only got up five minutes before you met him. You could say that Thelonius Gant has chiselled features but if you did you'd have to mention that the sculptor wasn't very good as for some his face that seems to have been set into a look of vague concentration or quite possibly discomfort. Thelonius is far from muscular but he does leave you with the impression that he's quite solid. His occupation and desire to stay alive have conspired to create physique best described as the awkward middle ground between muscle bound and lithe. Admittedly, it's not as impressive as either but it does mean that he's quite well rounded when it comes to a fight, as it so often does. Normally Gant wears a coarse grey canvas jacket and the same non-descript pants and boots any labourer in Verre Zon might wear. Sometimes he wears a chainmail vest beneath his jacket but this is usually only if he’s on a job he think might warrant it. Though it’s rare to see Gant wearing a weapon he usually has a knife hidden somewhere, just never in the same place and never just the one. Personality: If one were to ask one of Thelonius Gants friends to described them they would likely call him jaded, apathetic, cynical and more than a little aggravating, a combination of traits which makes it surprising that you managed to find a friend of his to ask. For Thelonius his needs and his safety always take priority and while he appears to take almost everything which happens in life as if it was a personal slight against him he never goes looking for trouble. He’s a sensible and pragmatic man, a man who will only take a risk if he’s being paid a great deal to do so. Gant is more than a little disenchanted with life, often disgusted with what his work requires him to do but while Gant admits he does bad thing he does them for good money. All he’s done is capitalised on his one true skill, breaking things. It’s just regrettably that some things turn out to be people. As a result of this Gant drinks quite heavily in places full of people he would like to think he has nothing in common with. Powers or Strengths: Unarmed combat: Though Thelonius’ swordsmanship is competent it will never be celebrated in song or story, his brawling on the other hand is the basis of many a colourful tale told in the taverns of Verre Zon. Thelonius is a graduate from a school of fighting that considers throwing dirt in your opponent’s eyes to be high brow and as such those he fights will often be walking funny for a few days even if they win the fight. Gant is an opportunist and will use anything he can find to his advantage, be it his surroundings or some piece of knowledge he's not supposed to have. For Gant considers off limit is losing and so he acts accordingly. Nullifies Magic: Gant is one of a rare few in Erde who have a natural ability to suppress magic. Gant cannot control this ability in anyway; instead it is always present and as a result means that he is essentially a mobile dead zone. The range of this ability is extremely short, barely in effect half a foot away from him, but his body is completely magic resistant. His touch can suppress magic within a person and can cause great pain in magical beings. However, while Gant is immune to magical manipulations and he can be harmed by physical effects caused by magic such as fire or explosions. Endurance: Without the use of any form of magic things Gant rarely finds anything very easy. Since his injuries take a long time to heal and he is unable to use any magical device which might make his job easier Gant has been forced to become a very persistent person. He can take a great deal of punishment and keep going. The only way to be truly certain that Gant won’t get back up is killing him. Weaknesses: Abrasive: Thelonius Gant likes to talk but he seldom has anything good to say. He seems to lack some very important social skills and as a result of this his relationship with other are often quite strained. He’d like to consider himself honest and forthright but since he seems actually enjoy aggravating people this is hard to believe. Apathy: Gant doesn’t consider himself to be a bad person but unfortunately his actions often contradict this. As a result of this Gant is quite apathetic and it doesn’t take much for him to get disheartened. Nullifies Magic: Due to the fact that Gant is something like a walking dead zone he cannot be healed magically or use any magical devices, facts which make living in Verre Zon quite difficult. Furthermore there a lot of people very interested in people possessing abilities such as Gant’s and would no doubt track him down for experiments if they knew. Far sighted: Gant has difficulty reading or seeing objects in great detail unless he’s wearing glasses. He does have a pair of glasses which he carries in his pocket but he tends not to wear them unless it’s completely unavoidable. History: Thelonius Gant was born in a small settlement known as Hedges, a place which was less a village and more a collection of farms which just so happened to be in close proximity to each other. His parents, Vacin and Aleria Gant, were both farmers and both refugees from the city of Benson, a miserable city located deep within one of the Dead Zones of Erde. They were not the only Bensonites to be found in Hedges, the settlement had practically been founded by a group of these refugees, and though they had barely been in the village a year when Thelonius was born they had already integregated into the community. Thelonius was their first child but he was soon followed by three others, two girls and a boy. Traditionally Bensonites had a very short childhood and in Hedges this was no different. Magic was a rare thing in Hedges but technology and machinery were rarer still so nearly all the task had to be done by hand. Everyone was expected to pull their weight in Hedges and it was no different for Thelonius. Thelonius never liked working on the farm but it was never a case of liking it, it was something which simply had to be done and Thelonius did do it for 26 years of his life. It was a difficult but a rewarding life but though Hedges hadn’t changed much in that time but Gant’s family did. As time went by Vacin Gant grew ill, the result of a childhood ailment he contracted in Benson, until it reached a point where he was barely able to walk. Doctors were called, even a man who claimed to be a magical healer was brought to the house, but none of them could do anything for Vacin. Looking after their ailing father became a priority of Thelonius and his siblings and the farm was secondary. The land could no longer be maintained by the Gant’s and so they reached agreement with a friend of the family that he would rent the land from them. However this was not enough to support the family and so Thelonius made the decision to move to the city of Verre Zon and get a job there. He had only been to the city a few times in his life and though there were more than a few people in Verre Zon who made a living out of swindling wide eyed new arrivals Gant was quite capable of looking after himself. It didn’t take long for Gant to get a job, he picked things up quickly and he was a hard worker, but it didn’t take him long to lose it either. Strange things happened around Gant, or to be more precise strange things didn’t happen around Gant. Magical devices were ever present in the city and they just didn’t seem to work when Gant was around. This happened to Gant several times, losing jobs for the oddest reasons and within a few months Gant had given up looking. Gant couldn’t go home, he couldn’t face returning to his family with nothing, and instead he began to haunt the grimmest taverns of Verre Zon. They were wretched places, he couldn’t afford to go to any of the better ones, and there were people there that Gant wouldn’t have even considered talking to a few months earlier. But he did talk to them and it was thanks to them that he finally found something he could do. People there always had problems and one occasion when Gant overheard a man complains about his competitor using some odd magical machine he offered to get rid of it for a fee. He was taken up on his offer and it wasn’t long before others wanted similar things done. They started off small, small acts of industrial sabotage and revenge, but soon the jobs got darker. The first time someone asked him hurt someone he hesitated but he couldn’t say no to the money. Gant did dirty work and he did it well. Gant has been doing this for six years now, diligently sending any money he earns back to his family in Hedges and never mentioning where it came from. Possessions: Thelonius rents a small apartment near the harbour which oddly enough he keeps in immaculate condition. Of course that isn’t a very hard thing to do when your worldly possessions are a few changes of clothes, a chainmail vest, a sword and a lot of letters. Thelonius doesn’t have a great deal of money, sending the bulk of what he earns back to hedges and only keeping enough to allow him briefly forget how he got it. |
